Matriculation vs State Board: are they the same now?

Updated 1 October 2026 · By TJMHSS, Karadivavi

Many parents ask whether a "Matriculation" school and a "State Board" school are different. The short answer: the syllabus is the same today, but the schools can be quite different. Here is what changed and what to compare.

What changed with Samacheer Kalvi

Earlier, Tamil Nadu had separate boards – State Board, Matriculation, Anglo-Indian and Oriental – each with its own syllabus. In 2010–11 the state brought in the uniform system of school education (Samacheer Kalvi). Since then, matriculation schools teach the same State Board syllabus and textbooks, and their students write the same public examinations.
